    The Howard County NAACP's Afro-Academic, Cultural, Technological and Scientific Olympics (ACT-SO) is a yearlong achievement program designed to recruit, stimulate, and encourage high academic and cultural achievement among African-American high school students.

    Interested students must apply online by APRIL 15.

    The Howard County Maryland Branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) is pleased to announce its 40th annual Freedom Fund Jazz Brunch on Saturday, May 11, 2019.  Doors open at 9:30 am. Event starts promptly at 10 am. This year’s Freedom Fund theme: Honoring Our Legacy, Energizing Our Future, captures the spirit of a 110 year-old organization anchored in a legacy of courage and unwavering in its fight for political, educational, social and economic equality for all.

    WHERE:

    The Hotel at Arundel Preserve | 7795 Arundel Mills Blvd – Hanover, MD – Less than a mile from Arundel Mills Mall. Free garage parking connected to the hotel.

    TICKETS, TABLES AND SPONSORSHIP:

    Freedom Fund tickets are $75 for adults, $55 for students

    Tickets may be purchased online  or by mail.

    Please consider supporting the event via sponsorship or advertising space in the 2019 Freedom Fund Souvenir Booklet.  All sponsorship levels will be acknowledged in the program booklet.

    WHO:

    Featured honorees and speakers will include Howard County’s first African American County Executive, Dr. Calvin Ball and one of Time Magazine’s Most Influential People, Dr. Freeman A. Hrabowski III, President of University of Maryland, Baltimore County– one the nation's leading producers of African Americans who earn M.D.’s and Ph.D.’s and one of the leading producers of African Americans who earn Ph.D.’s in science and engineering.

       


    Seven additional honorees will receive 2019 NAACP Leadership Awards.  Other highlights include a musical tribute in honor of mothers, performed by soul-stirring jazz artist, Lavenia Nesmith,  and Howard County’s very own Hammond High School Jazz Ensemble will take center stage for this celebratory occasion.

    PROCEEDS:

    Proceeds from the event will support the Howard County NAACP’s ongoing advocacy and education outreach, our Youth Council and The Afro-Academic, Cultural, Technological and Scientific Olympics (ACT-SO) programs, as well as activities supporting racial inequality related to health, housing, employment and business ownership.
